With a woman who fears God, whose inner strength draws from the wellspring of His life, time can only add to her true beauty. Of course, the signs of age will emerge, but the spirit that lights up her sparkling eyes will still be young, vibrant and alive. That’s what I want to grow to love.

What on earth am I here for?
Fact vs. Fallacy
Reality vs. Theory
Andrienne E. Boado, ACB, CL
I laugh. I cry. I walk. I talk. I breathe. I feel. I live. Then I die. And everyday while I am alive, I go through the same motion of living which is so constant like a cycle that makes me sick. How in the world will I find meaning in such cycle? Is it by helping others? By leaving a legacy? By making a difference? By living my life to the fullest? Then what?
Did anyone of you bother asking yourself the same question that Rick Warren asked: “What on earth am I here for?”
If I look at myself as a collection of bones and muscles made up of cells that further form tissues and organs, I do not see the need to find my purpose. What does it mean to be a human being? Am I just the sum of my parts? Am I just a higher form of animal that is able to laugh, cry, walk, talk, breathe and feel? Is that all that I am? Is that all that we are?
To see ourselves from the point of view of Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution will absolutely eliminate the need of discovering the purpose of our existence. Why? Because all it says about us is that we are nothing more than a bunch of cells that all “evolved” from a unicellular microorganism which later on became more complex as billions of years passed, surviving all of the climatic variations that took place in time by the process of adaptation, until such time that these complex cells were able to form the mammalian group of organisms. And then after such a long period of time…whapack! We now have the “higher form of animals” which are so sophisticated that they are called human beings (not just ‘higher animals’). Yet it is just so surprising that the purposeless and mindless process called Evolution was able to produce such intricate and sophisticated beings without having the intention to do so. The bottom-line of Darwin’s theory is that everything happened by chance. Therefore this further means that you and I are all here by chance. With this kind of reasoning, where and how does purpose find its meaning?
Why do we still need to find reasons in life if after all, we are here for no reason? In life, why do we still need to make choices when we can rely on chance, change and evolution to make us better organisms, and better humans? After all, there will come a time that our race will be extinct and there will be other forms of animals higher than us that will soon take over our planet leaving us, humans, as beings of distant past that once were and never will be again.
To see ourselves from the evolutionary viewpoint makes it needless for us to explore and discover, learn and grow, find sense in our lives, share our feelings, ideas and express ourselves. For when the time comes that we get swept away from the face of the earth as death takes its hold on us, none of the things we lived for and lived by would matter, even if we turn our lives to legacies that will be remembered, everything in this world has an end. That is the truth we must all face.
Now, I do not write to defy science. I use science to justify faith. And to answer the question “What on earth am I here for?” I believe it is better to first make sure that we know where we really came from and how we came about. Join me as we confront the Darwinian Theory and the Big-bang Theory with facts, not propositions; with laws, not theories.
· Fact #1: The average depth of topsoil throughout the world is about 8 inches. Allowing for losses due to erosion, it has been calculated that it requires 300 to 1000 years to build one inch [2.54 cm] of topsoil. On this basis, the earth could only be a few thousand years old, in contrast to what evolution states that billions of years passed before the human race came forth.
· Fact #2: The radioactive decay of either uranium or thorium produces helium. According to evolutionary theory, these decay chains have been going on for billions of years, and should therefore have produced a much larger quantity of helium than is found in our world. The amount of helium on our planet is far too small, if our world has existed for long ages. To fit the evolutionary pattern, our atmosphere would now have to contain much more than our present 1.4 parts per million of helium. Some evolutionists have suggested that helium is escaping out into space, but no evidence has ever been found to substantiate this. Research has shown that, although hydrogen can escape from the earth, helium is not able to reach ”escape velocity.” In order to do so, the temperature of the planet would have to be too high to support the life that evolutionists say has been here for over a billion years.
· Fact #3: In 1862, Thompson said the earth was 20 million years old. Thirty-five years later, in 1897, he doubled it to 40 million. Two years later, J. Jolly said it was 90 million. Rayleigh, in 1921, said the earth has been here for 1 billion years. Eleven years later, W.O. Hotchkiss moved the figure up to 1.6 billion (1,600,000,000). A Holmes in 1947 declared it to be 3.35 billion (3,350,000,000); and, in 1956, he raised it to 4.5 billion (4,500,000,000). Just now, the age of the earth stands at about 5 billion years. Pretty soon, someone will raise it again.
· Fact #4: The sponge is a creature which lives in many parts of the world, and is regularly harvested in the Gulf of Mexico. This little fellow has no heart, brain, liver, bones, and hardly anything else. Some sponges grow to several feet in diameter; yet you can take one, cut it up in pieces, and squeeze it through silk cloth, thus separating every cell from every other cell, and then throw part or all of the mash back into seawater. The cells will all unite back into a sponge! Yet a sponge is not a haphazard arrangement of cells; it is a complicated structure of openings, channels, and more. Yes, we said they have no brains; but now consider what they do: Without any brains to guide him, the male sponge knows to the very minute when the tide is about to begin coming in. Immediately he releases seed into the water and the tide carries them in. The female sponge may be half a mile away, but she is smart enough (without having any more brains than he has) to know that there are seeds from the male above her in the water. Immediately recognizing this, she releases thousands of eggs which float upward like a cloud and meet the male sperm. The eggs are fertilized and new baby sponges are eventually produced. I wonder how Uncle Charlie could explain such a phenomenon.
· Fact #5: The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics (Entropy) says “No.” This law tells us that a system will always go from ordered to disordered unless there is a plan or outside intelligence to organize it.
World-renowned evolutionist Isaac Asimov when discussing the second law of thermodynamics said:
“Another way of stating the second law then is: ’The universe is constantly getting more disorderly!’” If such law is true, how could it be possible that our earth and our genus in itself have become more and more orderly in the absence of an outside force?Friends, if I were to enumerate all the facts I collated, the whole of this newsletter would not be enough to contain them. While some might say that these facts are way too difficult for laymen like us to understand, and that if we were scientists, we would better be able to defend Uncle Darwin’s theory, let us now check on what other scientists pointed out.
· “Overwhelming strong proofs of intelligent and benevolent design lie around us … the atheistic idea is so senseless that I cannot put it into words.” – Lord Kelvin
· “The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.” – Louis Pasteur
· “Order is manifestly maintained in the universe … the whole being governed by the sovereign will of God.” - James Prescott Joule
· “There are those who argue that the universe evolved out of a random process, but what random process could produce the brain of man or the system of the human eye?” – Wernher Von Braun
· “I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity.” – Joseph Lister
· “Almighty Creator and Preserver of all things, praised be all Thou has created.” – Carolus Linnaeus
· “I am a Christian … I believe only and alone … in the service of Jesus Christ … In Him is all refuge, all solace.” – Johannes Kepler
· I believe in Jesus Christ’s ”Passion, His death, His resurrection and ascension, and all of those wonderful works which He did during His stay upon earth, in order to confirm the belief of His being God as well as man.” – Robert Boyle
· “Atheism is so senseless. When I look at the solar system, I see the earth at the right distance from the sun to receive the proper amounts of heat and light. This did not happen by chance. The true God is a living, intelligent and powerful being.” – Sir Isaac Newton
If such words from these famous scientists are too grueling for our obstinate atheist friends to digest, let’s see what Uncle Darwin himself had to say.
· “To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.”
· “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.”
Now, how can we hold on to something which Darwin himself doubted?
To base the beginning of our existence on a theory that falters is much like building our homes on sinking sand. No human knowledge, theory or wisdom could ever answer the question “What on earth am I here for?” Atheist Bertrand Russell even said, “Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” This statement leaves us with two choices: first, to admit that there is a God or second, to admit that life is meaningless. Now, which one do you choose?
Dear friends, to know our purpose, we must acknowledge who created us and understand why He did so. Colossians 1:16 states, “For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.” In Psalm 139:13, David states, “You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb,” and in Jeremiah 1:5 God says “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” The bottom-line of all these verses is to let us savor the truth that we, human beings, are creatures that are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and to let us understand that this is all for the glory of our Maker. In Psalm 139:2-3 David wrote, “You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways.”
Now, everytime I laugh, cry, walk, talk, breathe and feel, I know the very purpose of my existence, I know the very reason why I am here. I know that in such cycle that is so constant, Someone watches over me, delighting even as He witnesses the rising and falling of my chest as I breathe and the blood rushing through my veins as my heart beats. He watches me so closely that He can’t even afford to blink. And He does the same to you.
Writing to present scientific facts in a Toastmasters newsletter would I admit, seem unfitting to me. Yet to awaken the thankfulness in every beating heart I suppose is the very purpose of this piece of writing. Besides, everything on earth will pass away (Luke 21:33) and none of these earthly things we cherish will last forever. It might be hard to admit that public speaking in itself, as well as the very things we do in Toastmasters will soon pass away just like anything else on earth will. Yet for us, Toastmasters who have been graced with the gift to skillfully express ourselves, let me leave you with 1 Peter 4:10-11, “Each one should use whatever gift he has to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that all things may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.”
